The Little Stops That Become the Big Memories (and Why We Always Pull Over at Buc-ee’s)

The Little Stops That Become the Big Memories (and Why We Always Pull Over at Buc-ee’s)

We’ve been a little quiet over here lately. Not on purpose. Just life in a full season. Finishing up school, keeping everything moving, and trying to hold onto some kind of rhythm.

If I’m honest, we’re still figuring out how to juggle it all.

But on a recent road trip, we were reminded of something simple that felt worth sharing.

It’s not the big plans.
It’s not the perfectly mapped route.

It’s the small traditions that end up meaning the most.

The Stop We Always Look Forward To

If you’ve ever road-tripped through the southern U.S., you probably already know that Buc-ee’s is not just a gas station. It’s an experience.

For our family, it has quietly become a tradition.

Not something we planned or set out to create. Just a consistent “we always stop here” that the kids now expect and look forward to.

They play 'I spy' with every Buc-ee's billboard. Every year more of them can read the clever headlines along the highway making a game to spy them first an added thrill.

There is something about pulling off the highway, stretching your legs, and stepping into a place that feels busy and fun and a little over the top in the best way.

Every time.

The Moment That Stuck With Me

On this last trip, we stopped more than once in the same day. No regrets.

After the second stop, one of the kids climbed back into the car, let out a deep sigh, and said,

“I love Buc-ee’s.”

And that was it.

That’s the memory that stayed with me.

Not where we were going. Not how far we had driven. Just a simple moment that felt big.

It was one of those quiet reminders of why these trips matter.

Our Go-To Favorites

I’ve said before I could write an entire post on Buc-ee’s snacks, and honestly, I probably could. But here are our consistent favorites from this trip.

Must-haves:

  • Fresh nuts, especially the pecans

  • Ice cream sandwich cookies (sugar + salted caramel ice cream is A++)

  • Pulled pork or brisket sandwiches

  • Iced tea

  • Beaver Nuggets

Also worth grabbing:

  • Banana pudding

  • Cookie dough bites

  • Popsicles

  • Mints

And in the spirit of keeping it real, the iced coffee is very strong. Even with extra milk and sugar, it is a lot. I avoid it even though the coffee station itself is very impressive.

Also yes, we have had ice cream for breakfast. The ice cream sandwiches really are that good, and it was our last Buccee's of the trip. No regrets.

Better Options If You Want Them

One thing we noticed this time is how much they have expanded their higher protein and more balanced options.

If you are trying to mix in some better choices while traveling, there are actually good options now:

  • Jerky and dried meats in a lot of varieties

  • Pre-packed meats and cheeses

  • Hardboiled eggs

  • Fresh fruit and salads, the Southwestern was especially good

  • Protein shakes and bars in the packaged goods area

You can also order the BBQ meats by the pound if you want to skip the bread and keep things a bit lighter.

It is a small thing, but it makes road trips feel more manageable over multiple days.

Part of the Fun Is the Surprise

One of our favorite parts of stopping at Buc-ee’s is that it is never exactly the same twice.

There is always something new to try.

We have come to enjoy the hunt a bit. Walking through, seeing what catches our eye, and letting each trip have its own little highlight.

This time, we let the kids share a Vanilla Cream Soda and it did not disappoint. It felt simple, but special.

We also tried the fried chicken and fries, and they were surprisingly really good.

It is not about finding the perfect item. It is about the shared experience of discovering something together.

Timing Makes a Difference

If you have ever stopped at a Buc-ee’s during peak hours, you know it can be a lot.

We have found that stopping between 5:30 and 6:30 in the evening tends to be a sweet spot. It is still lively, but calmer and easier to enjoy.

When we can plan for that window, it makes the stop feel more relaxed.

A Surprisingly Fun Add-On

This trip we added something new to our routine, the car wash. It ended up being a highlight.

You can save $1 per gallon on gas, up to 15 gallons, when you purchase the wash (so then it's basically free). And it actually does a great job.

Even though hours earlier we scrubbed love bugs from the front window, we could not believe how clear the windshield was as we pulled away. It felt like a reset.

For the kids, it was also just fun. Another small moment that added to the experience.

Why These Little Things Matter

At the end of the day, this is just a stop on a road trip.

But it is also more than that.

It is a break in the drive.

A chance to stretch your legs and turn on your brain.

A reset for everyone.
A shared experience that everyone looks forward to.

When you homeschool, your days already look a little different. Travel becomes part of the learning and part of the rhythm of your life.

And these small traditions become anchors.

They give your kids something familiar. Something to look forward to. Something that feels like yours.

A Quick Note

We are not sponsored or paid to share this. This is just something our family genuinely enjoys, every time. I recorded the video on our Insta reel to share with coworkers from Canada who haven't had the chance to experience the joy of Buc-ee's.

It is one of those traditions that started small and ended up meaning more than we expected and that has continued 4 years strong.

Heading Into the Next Season

We are wrapping up our school year, leaning into spring, and hoping to settle into a more predictable rhythm this summer.

And if there is one thing we are carrying with us, it is this:

We do not need to overcomplicate things.

The moments our kids remember are often the simplest ones.

A road trip.
A second stop in the same day.
A quiet voice from the back seat saying, “I love this.”

If you are traveling soon, do not rush past the little stops.

They might just become your favorite part too.
